Easy Driver Install for MediaTek 7601 USB WiFi on Later Mint Kernels

[This device is natively supported by Ubuntu]

I did a 2015 Post on this device:

re it's driver failure on Raspberry Pis, with a working method for Mint 17.2, which was a bit involved:

Pi USB Mediatek WiFi dongle drivers and (failed) Pi install

There is now a MUCH easier install option for the firmware and drivers for this MediaTek USB for Mint Rosa (17.3) now, I found here:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/457061/ralink-mt7601u-148f7601-wi-fi-adapter-installation

If you are a student learning networking, it also shows the whole procedure for DHCP requests from scratch - ya don't get that with Windows! You can get asked that in interviews you know..?

What device is it exactly?

lsusb
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 148f:7601 Ralink Technology, Corp. MT7601U Wireless Adapter

The driver can be installed via a PPA:

"A Personal Package Archive (PPA) is a software repository for uploading source packages to be built and published as an APT repository by Launchpad."

"For kernels 3.19 and later a new mac80211 driver was written from scratch by the community. It was done because there is very little chance that this vendor driver will ever become part of official Linux kernel."

So, get it installed and running:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:thopiekar/mt7601

You are about to add the following PPA to your system:
According to the driver these USB devices are supported:

2955:1003
2955:1001
2955:0001
2A5F:1000
148F:760B
148F:7601
148F:6370
148F:7650

You can compare the list with the output of "lsusb".

sudo apt-get update

That update adds the extra PPA with the stock repos.

sudo apt-get install mt7601-sta-dkms

As I had a wifi card in this machine before - so a password set - a connection on ra0 is immediate as seen above by the connection details during DHCP allocation etc.

ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 1c:c1:de:51:a4:b9
inet addr:192.168.1.12 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

RX bytes:15488188 (15.4 MB) TX bytes:1189479 (1.1 MB)

ra0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:36:76:54:0b:01
inet addr:192.168.1.6 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Now I can unplug the ethernet and use just the wifi:

iwconfig
eth0 no wireless extensions.

Downloading a WP backup bwm-ng shows almost 1MB/s or 8Mb/s throughput - considerably lower in reality than the iwlist or iwconfig bit rates of 300Mb/s and 150Mb/s resp:

Yet on another PC another time I got cracking 64Mb/s:
