Quad Dell 490 Upgrade to 8 Cores and 20GB

These 490s with 2 dual core CPUs make very good budget gamer's to upgrade, though the fan is a bit noisier than the T3400 (single CPU - not a good future upgrade option!). The base 490 server (no OS) with 320GB HD, 4GB RAM and 2 x dual cores with UK shipping cost me £67. The NV 450 1GB was £15,

and a 6pin Molex/SATA power adaptor was £3.

The 2 extra Xeon(R) CPU X5355 quads were £18.

It can JUST run CoD Adv Warfare on Win7 Steam - with glitches/delays - with only 4GB ram but needs 8GB min so I got an extra 16GB RAM for £19

for a total spend of £132 so far and a final spec of:

A pretty good gamer for that money eh? So will it run CoD Adv Warfare in Win7...see page bottom.

Below is a really simple upgrade from 2 dual LGA771 CPU 5130 @ 2.00GHz, to 2 quad CPU X5355 @ 2.66GHz in the Dell 490. If you try to upgrade to faster CPUs (3GHz) than these, then the heat sinks may be inadequate past 120W heat dissipation. Research it. There are YouTube vids detailing this op for the 490.

Undo the screws of the heat sinks, clean the old compound off with a plastic scraper then use a cloth with IPA/switch cleaner to clean the copper base. Place the new LGA771 (Landing Grid Array) CPUs back in place and shut the levers back down and clean the surfaces with IPA. Put about a 1cm diameter blob of new thermal paste in the centre of the new CPUs and replace the heat sinks uniformly. Screw them down sharing the screw load equally as you tighten to firm hand tightness.

Adding the NV GPU for Steam/games tests, it requires the driver and reboot as before in the T3400:

Unigine in the T3400 with this GTS450 GPU and 8GB RAM gave:

In this 490 with (non T3400 interchangeable!) 4GB RAM Unigine runs well and shows:

glmark2 Score: 4186

Seems the 8 cores makes for much smoother graphics with the same card than just 4 in the T3400 so the upgrade is worth it overall for an extra £18 and tech interest - and a faster chip may be compatible if you want to spend more...an X5460 can be installed in Precision 490??? Needs research...for heat dissipation  for the 490 heat sinks:

TDP120 W also!!! Does it need better heat sinks even though this 2.66Ghz CPU runs ok at 120W? - 3GHz may be too much!?
